T1 Transit Document Everything You Need to Know

Do I Need a T1 (Transit Document) to Export Goods to the EU?

Yes. If you are leaving the United Kingdom and entering the European Union via any coastal or inland port, a T1 Transit Document is required to clear customs.
It ensures your goods can move under customs control without import duties being charged until they reach their final destination in the EU.

How to Obtain a T1 (Transit Document)

To issue a T1 Transit Document through Terminus, we will need the following:

  1. Completed credit application or financial check,
  2. Signed indemnity letter, authorising us to act as your guarantor for the movement.

Once your application is verified and approved, we generate your T1 in the NCTS (New Computerised Transit System).
You will receive a Local Reference Number (LRN) by email.
Before crossing the border, your driver or haulier must visit an Inland Border Facility (IBF) and present the LRN to collect the original T1 document.

How Long Does It Take to Issue a T1 Document?

Once all required documentation is received and approved, a T1 is typically issued within 45 to 90 minutes. Processing time may vary depending on the port, the type of goods, and HMRC system availability.

Why Is a T1 Transit Document Required?

A T1 allows goods to move from the UK through EU territory without paying import duties or taxes at each border.
Customs charges are suspended until the shipment arrives at its final destination, where the T1 is discharged (closed).

This guarantees that:

  • The goods remain under customs supervision throughout their journey.
  • Transit movements are secured by a customs guarantee from point of departure to point of arrival.
  • You avoid unnecessary customs payments or delays during border crossings.

Key Points to Remember

  • Collect your T1 document at any authorised Inland Border Facility (IBF).
  • Transit shipments from the UK into the EU are covered under a customs guarantee from origin to delivery.
  • Terminus provides EAD export declarations and full customs agency support for all HMRC-designated ports.
  • No hidden third-party fees — all services are handled directly by our in-house customs team.

Discharge & Closure

At the arrival point (final destination), the T1 must be discharged in the NCTS system — custom duties and VAT are then handled through the import procedure.
Failure to discharge properly, missing documentation or evidence, or delays may lead customs to demand payment of duty & VAT, issue recovery notices or impose penalties.
